The 2024 UCI Road World Championships, held in Zurich from September 22 to 29, brings the world's top cyclists together for one of the most prestigious events in road racing. This year marks a return to the stand-alone format after the "super" combined championships in Glasgow in 2023, which included multiple cycling disciplines. Zurich, a scenic yet challenging venue, provides a fitting backdrop for the intense competition that awaits.

The men's elite road race, scheduled for September 29, spans an arduous 273.9 km, with cyclists tackling undulating terrain, including two key climbs: the Zürichbergstrasse and Witikon. Riders will navigate a 27 km circuit, and the men will complete seven laps before reaching the finish at Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich. The race is expected to be a battle of endurance and tactics, especially given the difficult climbs that could shape the outcome in the final stages.
Among the top contenders for the men’s elite title is Remco Evenepoel, fresh off his gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics in both the road race and time trial. Evenepoel, though recovering from a mentally and physically draining season, will be closely watched as he aims to secure his second consecutive world title after dominating the championships in 2023. However, he will face fierce competition from Tadej Pogačar, the Slovenian powerhouse known for his climbing prowess. Pogačar's consistent form in the Classics and Grand Tours makes him a favorite, especially on a course that suits climbers.
Mathieu van der Poel, the defending champion, will also be vying for another rainbow jersey. Despite shedding weight to improve his climbing ability, van der Poel faces doubts about whether he can withstand the inevitable attacks from Evenepoel and Pogačar on the climbs. Another strong contender is Denmark's Mads Pedersen, who recently bested van der Poel in a sprint at the Tour de Luxembourg, signaling his readiness for the challenge.
Australia’s Michael Matthews, a veteran who won the under-23 world title 14 years ago, will also be a rider to watch. Known for his ability to rise to big occasions, Matthews will need to stay close to the climbers, particularly Pogačar, on the final laps to unleash his powerful sprint at the finish.
Switzerland’s own Marc Hirschi enters the competition in peak form after winning five consecutive one-day races. While the pressure of performing on home soil could be a factor, Hirschi has shown the capability to challenge the likes of Pogačar, making him an outsider with a real chance of an upset.
On the women’s side, the elite road race on September 28 promises to be equally exciting. The 154.1 km course takes the women through the same challenging circuit, with four laps of the final 27 km loop. Australian Grace Brown, the Paris 2024 gold medalist in the time trial, is one of the favorites. Brown's consistency and form suggest she could finish her career on a high, as this will be her final World Championships before retirement. However, she will face stiff competition from Olympic road race winner Kristen Faulkner (USA) and other strong riders aiming to claim the coveted rainbow jersey.
The 2024 edition is particularly special as it features both able-bodied and para-cycling competitions, a first in UCI World Championship history. This move towards inclusivity is a significant step for the sport, allowing para-cyclists to share the same courses and finish lines as their able-bodied counterparts, making this event one of the most important in terms of representation and diversity in cycling.
As the races unfold, the unpredictable nature of the sport, combined with the elite-level skill and strategic depth of the contenders, guarantees that this year’s World Championships will deliver thrilling and memorable moments for cycling fans worldwide.
